Where it comes from, and how it works
Nine Star Ki traces back to the I Ching, to yin-yang and Five-Element thought, and to the magic square known as the Luo Shu, in which every row, column and diagonal sums to fifteen. Mapping the nine stars, the eight trigrams and the compass directions onto that arrangement of numbers is the skeleton of the system.
It was codified in Japan as its own system of destiny study in the Taisho era. Once the date of birth and the calendar are fixed — a calendar of the nine stars that begins at Risshun — the Principal Star, and which "palace" it occupies in a given year, month and day, all follow from a fixed set of rules.
That calendar is based on the twenty-four solar terms, which track the sun. So the year begins at Risshun (around 4 February), and each month begins at its own solar term rather than on the first of the calendar month. Your monthly fortune therefore turns over at the solar term, not on the 1st.
Nine Star Ki is not a prophecy to be scored right or wrong; it is a system with regularities. That is exactly why a calculator can take your birthday and derive your character and the wave of your fortune automatically.
